Gateways From Our Past to Our Present

A first step in the darkness leaving one to really understand the concept of blindness. The moisture of the cool air films over the entire body making the body shudder unconsciously. You reach around for something to guide you and come into contact with a cool, moist stone. Nothing to distract you as your mind begins to wander to fill it–to entertain it. As your mind thinks about a thought that you try not to think about. You begin to face fears, doubt, and everything that seems to bog you down; and yet everything that makes you happy. Here in this darkness you have found yourself, when you thought you were lost.

It was during the Franklin D Roosevelt Presidency, to help reduce the unemployment rate during the Great Depression, that he started what was called the Civilian Conservation Corp. For just a $1 a day people helped build the great monuments that are around today. Some of the people came to Florida, some to the Keys and some to what is refered to as the Panhandle of Florida. A man stumbled across a cave in Florida’s Panhandle when a tree fell and punched a hole into the ground, and this is where my family and I began our own adventure in the caves. Now sad to say most caves are now only visited through tours. Little is around today that one can find for the first time. But then one may never know with caves. Out in the country especially the ground you walk on might hold one of these treasures.

Mithraic is an ancient Roman religion, practiced by just one of the societies who used caves as a sanctuary, where little is known of them due to their strict secrecy. What little we do know causes great debate among many scholars. Yet they have used man-made caves as a sanctuary to practice their religion.

Even today caves play a role in understanding the past, caves are a gateway to yesterday. Other caves in Florida are all submerged but this doesn’t stop the exploration of these keepsakes. In fact science is finding new species of the past and present merged down in this dwellings.

So take the time and get lost to find yourself in these natural wonders and you just might find yourself in the end.
